The town of Sebring, Florida is located in the rural area of Miami-Dade County. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Sebring was John Hill in 1853. The town was platted on December 15, 1875 by William Lockwood and James Laughlin. In 1907, the post office was established at Sebring and became a general store. On October 15, 1941, during World War II, the United States Army Air Forces activated an outpost called Camp Blanding near Sebring and used it as a training ground for pilots from various units stationed in Florida. From 1945 to 1947, Camp Blanding served as headquarters for Strategic Air Command's Eighth Air Force flying missions over Europe. On January 9, 1954, Camp Blanding merged with other commands within Headquarters USAF to become Headquarters USAF Pacific Command which remains headquartered there today. On November 30th of that year (1946), Hurricane Bea struck the U.S., causing widespread damage throughout much of South Florida including Sebring where more than $100 thousand worth of property were destroyed or damaged by storm forces alone! Prior to this event however, Sebring had long been known as one of America's most gracious communities! Many local businesses closed their doors following the storm but quickly reopened after being re-opened by volunteers! As many as 50% or more of all farm produce grown in Southwestern Florida comes from Sebring! There are several interesting points about this particular hurricane such as: First off - Bea caused extensive flooding across much of South Florida; secondly - many structures were either destroyed or heavily damaged; and finally - people simply refused to give up their homes even though they faced significant challenges! With all these things considered...it's safe to say that Bea left a lasting impression on both residents and visitors alike! Aftermath & Legacy: Today’s community came into being due largely to two factors: Hurricane Bea’s devastating effects upon southern FLORIDA followed by Williams donation of land for a small town center on December 15th/1875 just east (north)of present daySebrings intersection with US 1A (now I-10A). Aftershock repairs/maintenance have kept it thriving ever since….. It started out as just one house on donated land………. Today we enjoy beautiful Main Street running perpendicular east-west through our heartland…..This charming little community has seen some pretty amazing things happen here over time………….. Most importantly though………. EVERYONE MARRIES HERE!!!
In 1919, Sebring became the largest city in Florida and the third-largest in the United States after New York City and Chicago. The area that is now downtown Sebring was a small village named Perrysburg when it was founded by citrus farmers in 1892. The name change came about because of an agreement between the Perrysburg landowner, J.C. Myer, and then-Mayor James Fenton to rename all of Miami-Dade County after military veterans who had died in World War I. The first business in Sebring was a grocery store run by Henry Heftman and his brother-in-law Cletus Sawaya on Orange Avenue near US 27/SR 2 (later State Road 2). By 1920, there were three businesses open for retail sales: A & W Merchants Store on Main Street; Dyer's Dairy store at 124th Street; and Heftman Bros., Grocery Store at 137th Street. In 1922, Heftman opened what is now known as the Coca Cola bottling plant on Jacksonville Boulevard just north of Interstate 95. It wasn't until 1925 that he started manufacturing soft drinks here under the brand name "Coca Cola." In 1933, Sebring became part ofFWSO Municipal Service District No. 8 through annexation by Fort Walton Beach adjacent to nearby Westwood Village developments which were being developed as an International Airport concessionaires enclave with homes built to resemble airports around the world but without airfields or air traffic control tower facilities. In 1936, FWSO services district #8 merged with SEPTA Rail District 3 into SEPTA Regional Rail Authority which took over most passenger operations within SEPTA system including buses, trains, light rail cars - all operated using trackage rights from Fort Walton Beach Railway Station eastward along US 27/SR 2 to Jacobs Field near downtown Pittsburgh PA before terminating at University Park station located south of campus across SR 1 from NorthPark Plaza Shopping Center also serving as home to many local restaurants including PNC Bank Stadium during football games since its construction in 1997) . With this merger came increased funding for infrastructure projects such as new tracks and signals east of town center (including renovations to Jacobs Field), streetcars service along South Gaines Street between Interstates 95A&95B (and concurrent widening of SR 1 between these two freeways), installation of high voltage power lines northward connecting Lighthouse Point Nuclear Power Plant just northwest of town center withSEPTA's Marriotts Hotel complex across SR 1 - providing electric power for central business districts throughout Pennsylvania (the first nuclear power plant west of the Allegheny Mountains) . By 1973 when SEPTA Regional Rail Authority merged with Penn Central Railroad Company assets including stations inside South Korea Township east of town center resulting in establishment of Seoul Subway Line No. 5 extending service upholstered coaches running parallel streets southwest from Seoul Railway Station parallel to I-95BUS) , Downtown Sebring had grown substantially including several office buildings housing various government agencies such as county courthouse Annex Building located on Courthouse Square northeast corner Washington Boulevard & Harrisonburg Road ; UF Health System Hospital building located on Administration Drive southeast corner Patton Boulevard ; American Airlines Headquarters building located across I-95BUS from international terminal ); numerous shopping malls both locally owned and managed including Eckerd Mallsouthwest corner Patton Boulevard & Roosevelt Roads ; Stadler dealership located southeast corner Roosevelt Roads ; Country Club Plaza development off SW corner Patton Blvd.; Centennial Park purchased adjacent to Quaker Oats Factory complex containing baseball fields stadium having grandstands overlooking Tryon Lake; Sawgrass Mills home arena featuring professional basketball teams Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat - becoming one large entertainment complex hosting concerts summertime headlined by Cirque du Soleil shows produced by LED Light show production company Spectra Stage Entertainment LLC ) .
