In 1903, James Southerland bought land around present day Sebastian Creek and established an agricultural colony called Stonington Farms which continues to operate to this day. In 1923, King Cotton Fields Agricultural & Ranch Co., Incorporated was formed with cattle drives taking place each year nearpresent day Sebastian Creek and Key West until 1970 when they were discontinued due to lack of profitability. On January 1st, 1909 Escambia County was created from partsof Santa Rosa County including key towns such as Key West and Pensacola along with all its properties within Escambia County boundaries eastward to Indian River Bayou including present day Gibraltar Beach and Broad Harbour just south of Penland Beach before turning inland towards Mobile Bayou between Atchafalaya Falls Road/Upper Gulf Highway and Lookout Mountain Pass Rd./Upper CSX Railroad tracks about 7 miles southeast of current day New Smyrna Beach less than 2 miles west Of old Fort Myers beach
