Sebastian, Florida is a small town located in the Miami-Dade County region of Florida. The population was 27,844 at the 2010 census. Sebastian is often called "The Venice of South Florida" because of its number of canals and waterways. It is known for its seafood, wine, and golf courses. The name Sebastian originates from the Gulf Stream which flows through the town. In 1795 Spanish colonists founded Sebastian on a small island in Miami River after they were driven out by Indians. The first white resident was James Fenton who arrived in 1819 with his family. In 1828 Portuguese traders brought settlers to Sebastian and organized an industry around salt production and commerce. By 1830 there were 3 stores, 2 sawmills, 1 gristmill, 4 hogsheads of molasses each year, 10 slaves and 5 cattle on the island. In 1850 Fenton built a pier to export goods to Cuba but it stopped operations after only six months due to bad weather conditions. By 1865 when annexation by Miami happened Sebastian had become part of Miami proper with a post office and 3 stores including oneowned by J M Wright which later became DWMH (now known as American Airlines). The town's growth slowed during World War II as businesses closed due to shortages caused by bombing raids over Miami Beach; however it increased significantly following the war when new housing developments started being built in what are now downtown streets such as Flagler Street between Washington Boulevard and Bay Street In 1970s several businesses decided not to open because of low business activity due to competition from other towns within Miami-Dade County; however this changed when Mayor Carlos Gimenez created the Economic Development Authority which invested in new technology companies In recent years Sebastian has been experiencing rapid development with several high-rise apartments being erected near US Hwy 1A/B while another large project is currently under construction that will include 300 homes on 12 acres next to US Hwy 623/Northeast Expressway opposite I-95 In 2013 Stonington Properties Incorporated announced plans for an $11 million mixed use development called "EAST COAST", consisting of 470 luxury apartments above ground level with underground parking for 800 vehicles plus retail space totaling 825 square feet max size adjacent to two soccer fields used for practices by local teams

The area now known as Sebastian County was part of the Indian Territory until 1867 when it became part of Florida after the cession of that territory to the United States during the Mexican-American War.
