The area that now includes Sebastian was first inhabited by Arawakan Indians as early as 500 CE. The area became part of Spanish America in 1821 and was named after Admiral Fernando de la Vega y Rodriguez, who fought in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1901, Sebastian became an independent municipality with a population of 462 citizens. On July 29th, 1922, Hurricane Andrew made landfall near Sebastian and caused extensive damage. On September 3rd of that year Hurricane Leslie hit nearby Naples and destroyed much of what remained of Sebastian; however, most damage occurred to properties within two miles of where present day Sebastian stands. In 1990s there was discussion about building a new campus for UMMI specifically for business students which never came to fruition due to financial constraints brought on by recessionary times across all institutions throughout South Florida at that timeL In 2013 construction began on an $80 million football stadium beneath Kendall College which will become home to both UMMI's men's & women's sports programs as well as regional college football games/events As one result of this increased development activity in Sebastian over the past few years there has been an increase in nightlife options available as well as more limited access than ever before to local businesses that may have once been essential for residents such as grocery stores or service providers

In 1990, a major fire destroyed 45% of downtown with only 3 businesses remaining standing following 91 daylong flames that consumed 5 blocks of business district The community suffered from several years of economic decline beginning in the early 2000’s as more residents relocated away from area due toommunications technology advancements such as cell phone service availability which made life difficult for small businesses reliant upon local deliveries
