Sebastian, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Sebastian's ZIP code is 34752. Sebastian is located about 26 miles (41 km) northwest of Gainesville and about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Tampa. The community began as a farming village in 1892 and was named after Sebastian Fenton, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the House of Burgesses from Virginia who served in 1783-1784. In 1907, the United States Geological Survey recorded that there were only nine residences in Sebastian and it had a population of only 153 people. However, by 1970, when the town incorporated, it had grown to 1,827 residents with a total land area of just over 5 square miles (15 km2). Today, Sebastian is home to a variety of businesses including three businesses which are considered Fortune 500 companies: Penske Automotive Group Inc., Mastercard America LLC and Sunshine Tanning Salon &spa &massage parlor (). Additionally, the nearby University of South Florida campus provides education opportunities for locals and students alike. A cotton gin and mill were built in 1851 by James Wetherbee and are now known as the Wetherbee Cotton Mill Museum. In 1898, Sebastian did not have any commercial development until a store opened up on Main Street which became known as "The Grocery". The store continued to be open until 2008 when it closed its doors after 25 years in business. In 1907, the first school in Sebastian was built by Mrs. Ethel Beattie and Mr. John Sikes with money from Colonel John Fuller who donated land for the school. It was originally called Stonington School but changed its name to Sebastian after him because he had sent someone from Stonington to help build it there. In 1916 Drury Capps bought land north of town for $10 per acre which he used for his farmstead and cattle pastures which continues today as farmland between South Side Road (SR 620) and Old Spanish Trail (OSR). On October 3rd 1916 Drury Capps organized what is now known as the Sebastian Chamber of Commerce which met at his home that year to make decisions about town growth including annexing other towns in Leon County such as Live Oak and Bay City so that they could get some benefits from annexation too In 1938, during World War II, Sebastian became one of several communities along US-1 east of Tallahassee where residents collected foodstuffs needed by troops stationed there like gasoline, rubber goods etc., then delivered them back into town using their own vehicles or horse drawn carts called "Canned Goods trains". After the war ended in 1945 local businesses slowly went out of business due to competition from larger stores opening up throughout Leon County like Walmart or Sears . However things started changing again when Danvers Homes began buying up older businesses within town limits starting with The Grocery & Feed Store on SR 620 south side in 1978 followed by many more over time until now there are only 3 buildings left standing within town limits: The Grocery (now defunct), Danvers Homes & Farms on SR 620 north side (closed 2013), andMrs Ethel Beattie'soriginalschool(currentlyanmemorial park). All other buildings have been replaced with newer structures over time including new high rise homes built around 2006-2008 just outside of town limits along SR 621 Moved out? Sebastian, Florida is a city in Tallahassee County, Florida, United States. The population was 31,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee-Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sebastian was founded on November 12, 1892 by Captain W. H. Sebald and his wife Emma as a seasonal summer haven for Confederate veterans from Georgia and other parts of the South who were unable to find permanent homes. The town grew rapidly after it became a local post office in 1895 and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1912, Sebastian became an incorporated municipality with its own government and fire department while also annexing surrounding townships including Tomoka and Newnan which had populations of around 10 thousand each. In 1925–1926, Sebastian annexed Plantation Key which had a population of about 25 thousand people but was unincorporated because it lay outside the municipal boundaries
