Sebastian is part of the greater Miami–Dade metropolitan area. The first settlers in Sebastian were the James family who moved from Ireland to Sebastian in 1835. In 1865, A.J. James opened what became known as "the best restaurant in Miami". It was here that he met his future wife Alice and they married there on November 2nd 1865. The first store in town was called "The General Store" which opened on December 14th 1870 by Wm J Moore and his brother-in-law John Kipperidge (no relation to Don Kipperidge). They had nine children: Everette (1871-1949), Ollie (1875-1930), Florence (1877-1964), Marion (1879-1965), Edwin Landis (1881-1972) Alfredo Jr.(1903-) and Donald Landis(1907-) who later founded Pompano Beach based Coral Gables Shopping Center, one of the largest shopping centers in South Florida with over $2 billion worth of retail sales since it opened in 1984. In 1912, Sebastein residents voted to create their own school district which would serve all students within their community including those living near other towns such as Hollywood or North Kendall Beach whom they considered outsiders because they did not attend any local schools or businesses! This early form of education for all citizens was an important step towards developing self reliance for both young people and their families during this time period! On October 10th 1914 Mrs Lillie Fenton organized a bake sale to raise money for her new schoolhouse that would serve grades two through eight! The proceeds went towards purchasing four southern white pine desks which we now use as our school desks today! After years of hard work by many individuals including Mrs Fenton herself - the Sebastein School District was created on January 7th 1915 with Superintendent C H Burnett as its first chairman! For thirty five years Sebastian residents have been proud owners/members of their local school district - serving your kids well every day!!!
