Sebastian's nickname is "The City on the Gulf" due to its location on the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico and its easy access to water resources. Sebastian has been called "the Venice of Broward County." The city was founded in 1892 by two brothers, John and George Sebestyen. The first house in town was completed in 1893 and named after them both - George Sebestyen House. In 1907, Sebastian incorporated as a municipality and reeve James Hickey became its first mayor. It was during this time that Sebastian began to grow as a commercial center with pulpwood mills nearby and an oil Refinery located about three miles away. The city also became home to one of South Florida's first schools - Stonington School (now part of Alachua High School). By 1925, when it merged with Fort Lauderdale into Broward County, Sebastian had reached its current size with over 40 establishments including five banks (Gulf National Bank & Trust Company; Citizens First National Bank; State Street Trust Co.; First American Banking Co.), twelve churches (First Baptist Church; Methodist Episcopal Church; Catholic Church - Holy Name Parish), eleven hospitals (Broward Hospital; Memorial Hospitality Incorporated; Southern Health Care Corporation - now part of US Airways), ten businesses blocks (Bechtel Building Block No.1: Litton Paper Products Company - later acquired by WorldCom); seventeen thousand people lived within a radius of downtown Sebastians borders making it one of South Floridas most populous cities at the time! In 1951-1953 during America's involvement in Korea there were several large demonstrations against U S wartime policies taking place throughout South Floridas towns like Sebastian which led to increased law enforcement activity around town edges looking for protestors or anyone who looked suspiciously like they might be involved in any act or demonstration opposed to what their government stood for or supported! This culminated with an arrest warrant being issued for Mayor James Hickey on charges such as inciting a riotous assembly! As protests continued weekly into early 1953 local Palm Beach Daily News columnist Jack London wrote “It’s not just that our young men are drafted into armies without proper training—we have no idea how they can think straight when put under stress... these demonstrations are simply too much for our tolerant society” In 1978 Hurricane Andrew destroyed much property across Naples/Sebastian area so much so that entire block betweenNE Second Avenue Nueces Street eastward along US 1A closed off completely killing four people including two children playing inside while their families evacuated!! The city was founded by Africans who were brought over as slaves in 1835.
