Sebastian, Florida is a small town in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 3,578 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sebastian was founded on November 7, 1859 by John and Nancy Sebastian as a postal station on the old Miami-Dade Road. The name “Sebastian” originated from Captain Sebastian who explored the area in 1794 during his exploratory survey of what is now Polk County. In 1859, postmaster John Sebastian donated land to build a school and store on the site which became known as Sebastein School House. On May 8th, 1860 – just two weeks after Floridas admission into the United States – Captain James Cook anchored off Sebastian with his HMS Beagle and 11 men including 2 interpreters to explore this newly discovered country that would soon become Florida. Over time many pioneer families moved to Sebastian including: Cooks; Warrington; French; Dyer; Leakey; Thurston; Hickey (1905). On October 15th 1909 tragedy struck when one mile east of Sebastians main square two horse carts were hit by lightning while traveling down Main Street and both drivers were killed instantly. For decades afterwards local legend has it that if you touch any of these remains you will be granted wishes for good health or wealth etc., so much so that people still place offerings at various places where they believe lightning struck during those years long ago! Nowadays most people visit this spot annually during harvest season in order to view large piles of bones lying around uneasily reminding everyone why tourism is such an important part of this community today! The first post office opened at Sebastein on December 12th 1865 under name “Carta” due to then US Postmaster General Gideon Welles feeling that there should be only one post office serving all of Polk County since it had been divided into five districts! The first resident was Rufus Wernham who lived in a log cabin near present day Broadway Avenue and Old Highway 5 North until he moved into his current home overlooking Sebastein High School about 1912! On July 6th 1897 German immigrant Wilhelm Ziegler erected what is now known as Ziegler House which served as Post Office until 1907 when it burned down!!! Two years later another German Immigrant named Gustav Kapp arrived from Stuttgart Germany with his family and set up shop next door to Mrs Putney’s bakery before moving outatus across town in 1915!!! Today we can still see traces of Kapp’s farmhouse near Market Square looking like something out of a horror movie! In 1919/1920 Captured American Soldier Thomas Jarrellopp came through town selling newspapers at Market Square before being captured by Confederate Forces while disguised as an American soldier!!!!! After spending some time in a POW camp inside Fort Brooke military prison he finally came back overland to freedom via Jacksonville Landing on April 29th 1921!!!!!!! This event brought instant fame & notoriety not only for Jarrellopp but also for local boys like Bill Willingham who helped him get back onto horseback & ride all over central Florida!!!!!!!!!! Many other famous stories followed such as WWII veteran Joe Coleman coming through town multiple times daily giving away war supplies free OF COURSE!! All without getting caught & enjoying full legal rights given then thru Military Code Section 1035(a)!!!!!!!!!!!!! And here we are today continuing along these wonderful historic paths making sure history never forgetes our great community!!!!
