The name "Sebastian" may be derived from Spanish meaning "safe and sound." In 1837, an Englishman named Edwin Stuart discovered oil shale near what is now Sebastian and named it after his discovery. The community began to form in the early 1880s when a group of German immigrants settled there. Sebastian became known as a resort town because it offered easy access to Miami and its beaches. In 1978, developers built the first shopping mall in Southwest Florida and called it "Sebastian Mall." By 1990, however, the mall had fallen into disrepair and was closed down by developer Cendant Corporation. It reopened under new management but failed to find success until 2003 when they opened an additional several stores inside the old mall complex. That year also marked the opening of a new football stadium which has been home to various teams including two terms as host city for Super Bowls. As of February 2015 Uniregional Bank was headquartered in Sebastian with over 290 employees across 14 countries on three campuses totaling . In March 2018, US First Capital purchased Uniregional Bank from Banco Santander for $3 billion making Sebastian one of SouthFlorida's largest banking districts

Sebastian is a town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Sebastian is an agriculture and rural community with a small retail sector. Sebastian's history dates back to 1892 when it was named for Captain Sebastian Knight of the U.S. Coast Guard. It became a town on November 5, 1907 when it was organized as a municipality by act of the Florida Legislature. In 1925, it amalgamated with neighboring towns of Clearwater and Wesley Chapel to form what is now known as Polk County (USA). The first settler in Sebastian were three brothers: John A., James B., and George Crouse who all arrived in1892 from New York City on the SS "Oceanic." They founded a farmstead which they called "Moses" after their father Moses Crouse. In 1915 John A.'s son, William D., donated land to make way for an agricultural school that would serve future residents of both townships together as part of what would become known as "Polk County Agricultural College." The college opened its doors in 1916 and until its closure in 1978 served as the only educational institution between Clearwater and Wesley Chapel. The land where the college sat today has been used ever since for other purposes such as housing developments, shopping malls, and corporate campuses; however remnants of this former campus can be seen throughout both townships today. In 1926, during what is now known as Florida's Great Depression two local businessmen named Halsey Eastman and Ernest Jansen decided to start an agricultural cooperative which would provide leadership in developing Southcentral Florida's food production resources-the first such enterprise in that region Their Cooperative Extension Service operated out of Eastman's home until 1954 when he moved his office to Stonington along with other members of his staff under then Governor Lawton Chiles' administration . This service remains one of the largest government-sponsored extension services still operating statewide today In 1938 another local entrepreneur named Vernon Beasley purchased 4 acres adjacent to present day State Road 7 near where US Route 301 meets US Route 46 for use as an agricultural dealership serving those living within mile radius including parts of Sebastian but not beyond . This dealership attracted much attention from area farmers due to its low prices combined with Beasley’s innovative techniques for marketing products including grow tents which allowed him wide scale experimentation with new crops When World War II began he raised money through selling war bonds by growing tomatoes on his property After becoming aware that there could be no possibility that he could raise enough money through these methods he began experimenting with processing fruits using unusual methods like soaking fruit overnight before freezing into concentrate or pressing juice from unripe bananas However these ventures failed due mainly to lack of consumer demand while also causing environmental damage because high levels of nicotine were produced which caused trees around his property to turn black and die
