Sebastian is located on the St. Johns River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa). The name "Sebastian" comes from Spanish meaning "vessel of salt." On November 3, 1821, a group of British settlers named it San Augustine de la Vega y los Embajadores after Saint Augustine of Hippo's monastery in Spain. The first post office in Sebastian was established in 1824. In 1869, the town changed its name to Sebastianville to honor Commodore John D. Stuart who had been killed during the Mexican-American War two years earlier while leading an American force against Mexico at Torreón on July 7, 1846 (). After Commodore Stuart's death, his family donated land for a public square near where they lived and built a courthouse and jail there that remain today as part of the Old Courthouse Square complex. In 1902–1903 construction began on what would become known as De Soto Boulevard which ran through downtown Sebastian and divided the town into two sections: those living east of De Soto Boulevard went to Hollis Avenue while those west of De Soto Boulevard went to Upper East Side Avenue; this naming change followed development alongDe Soto Boulevard by developer George Fenton who wanted to parallel Bay Street/Old York Road which then connected Tampa with Jacksonville via US 98 south from here). In 1928 local newspapers reported thatigator hunting tournaments were being held annually at Keene Park across from present day Ponce City Hall; this event continues today as Champions’ Club Golf Tournament presented by Coastal Credit Union Company with proceeds going towards conservation efforts within Keene Park each year since 1928. In 1954 James Ewing became General Manager for Waffle House Chain Corporation operating out of three locations throughout central FL In 1961 Waffle House Corporation closed all their restaurants throughout southern FL due to JBLA's competition unsuccessfully trying to open new stores near military bases) following 12 years in business) including one store opening approximately 8 miles north of original location just off I-95 exit 417) relocating back over 100 miles away from original restaurant site) becoming only major occupant once again within city limits
