Sebastian, Florida is a small town located in the Unincorporated County of Sebastian. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,848. Sebastian is home to the Sebastian School District and has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6 km²). The community took its name from Captain Sebastian Sound which lies along US 41 south of town. The first settler in what became Sebastian was John Davidson who arrived in 1800. By 1825, there were four families living in what is now Sebastian. In 1833, Colonel Nathan Bedford bought land near present-day town and built a cabin on top of an old millrace known as "Bedford's Mill". This mill still stands today and provides power for the district's homes and businesses. In 1840, George Stephenson donated land to build a school at present day town limits. Classes began on September 3rd that year with fourteen students attending Mrs Beale's schoolroom across from her house on Main Street. The school operated until 1886 when it burned down due to a lightning strike during winter term). A new school was built in 1887 by Fenton & Robertson and was named after Captain Sebastian Sound which lay along US 41 south of town at that time; it too failed to survive World War II but still stands today as part of the Sebastian Public Schools system.
