Sebastian was founded in 1892 by German Immigrants. The community is named after the Spanish explorer and scientist St. Sebastian, who died during an expedition to Florida in 1565. The first settlers arrived in 1892 and built their homes on what is now the east side of town. After two years of construction, they completed the village center which included a school, post office, bakery and grocery store. By 1898, there were also three churches in Sebastian - Saint Joseph's Catholic Church on College Avenue (now Main Street), Marymount Protestant Episcopal Church on Third Street between Highways 10A and 10B (now University Boulevard) and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church on Olive Branch Road (present-day State Road 7). In 1902, a fire destroyed most of the original buildings in downtown Sebastian but not before establishing an early cooperative spirit among local farmers who would later contribute to the growth of the community. In 1907 Stephen Fenton bought land at Business Bayou near present day First Baptist Church for $10 per acre; he began to develop it into what is today Sebastian Landing Marina with its own wharfage and_campsites for pleasure boats_. One resident wrote: "For many years I have constantly felt that my life here [in Sebastion] was something worth living for... The people are friendly enough--not pushy or boastful--and they will let you know all about their own business." The community experienced some major changes during World War II when many residents enlisted in service as part of military efforts throughout America. Many businesses closed down due to wartime rationing but when hostilities ended those businesses reopened shortly thereafter. One such business that reopened was The Johnnie Rockets which became known for selling southern style hot dogs out their front door from 1945 until 1995 when it moved across state line into Tallahassee Georgia where it remains today as an establishment called "The Joe Rocket". This period also saw growth within the agricultural industry as farms increased production prices due to increased demand from American troops fighting overseas during World War II; this led to more jobs available for locals once hostilities ended although some rural families did experience hardship due to changes brought about by technology like refrigeration which made food cheaper while at the same time making farming more difficult.
