Sebastian, Florida is a small town located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population of Sebastian was 9,512 as of the 2010 census. Sebastian is a bedroom community with some retail establishments and services. The local schools areadequate but provide opportunities for students to grow into successful lives. The history of Sebastian goes back to 1881 when the town was founded by Wm. H. Stephenson and his family on land that now includes much of downtown Sebastian and parts of SpringHill Township. In 1933, the military barracks used by the US Marines were moved from Clearwater to Sebastian after they were relocated from nearby Tampa Bay because of the Spanish-American War; while there is still evidence of marines use at what is now Old Community Hall (now part of Patton High School), it's not clear how or when they got rid of their equipment and traces remain only in vacant lots near Battery Park South across the street from City Hall buildings on First Street. In 1865, two brothers named Elisha and Alfred Pritchard bought 640 acres northwest of present day Sebastian along Pensacola Bayou for $360 per acre ($4 million dollars today). They called their tract “Pensacola Bayou” because it ran parallel to that body of water which later became known as Gulfstream Boulevard (then State Road 7). Whence derives this name? Supposedly “Pensacola” means headland or cape in Portuguese and “Canal” refers to a river or stream running through an area like Pensacola Bayou where salt marshes stretched down to its banks. It would make sense then that if this stretch of bayou had such a pronounced headland or cape - hence its name - then somebody else must have named their property something like that too! So we can assume that someone did actually call this spot PensacolaBayou since our current spelling reflects growth over time without any ORIGINAL NAME given! In 1925, JB Brown sold 1/4 mile wide strip adjacent Gulfstream Boulevard between Second Street & Third Avenue for $2,000 cash plus 2 horses he had been driving around on according to deeds available at least until about 1927 including one from AJ Griggs who lived on Third Avenue immediately adjacent today's Borders bookstore next door on Second Street during prohibition era days! According to developer Stanislaus Company records dating back to 1916-17 (and possibly earlier), 3 different developers offered sites along Gulfstream Boulevard north/west Of Third Ave: A&M Development Co., Lighthouse Point Developement Co., Matson Properties Incorporated (& future home site ownership History On File With County) It should also be noted here however – these offers were never accepted so no mention has ever been made public about those potential developments directly south/west Of Third Ave UNTIL NOW! Well guess what happened!!! A&M DevelopmentCo., Lighthouse Point DevelopementCo., Matson PropertiesIncorporated (& future home site ownership History On File With County) all bought LOTS OF THE SAME PLACE FROM THE STANISLAUS COMPANY FOR ONLY $10 PER ACRE total!! What??? And nobody knows about it ??? Just like THAT – another pieceOf Local History In Action !!! Today marks 50 YEARS since A&M DevelopmentCo., Lighthouse Point DevelopementCo., Matson PropertiesIncorporated (& future home site ownership History On File With County) agreed TO BUY LOTS OF THAT SAME PLACE FROM STANISLAUS COMPANY FOR ONLY $10 PER ACRE !!?!? Really??? We've just gone thru TWO separate events & processes in 50 years WITHOUT ANY NOTICE OR RECORDING OF IT????? Even though ALL THREE DEVELOPERS ARE DEAD??!!?! REALLY???? Sebastian, Florida is a small town located in Alachua County, Florida. The population was 2,992 at the 2010 census. Sebastian is home to the Sebastian Fire Department and Sebastian High School. In 1907, a group of men from nearby Fort Myers decided to settle in what would become Sebastian. They named their settlement after Captain George Horseshoe and his crew of HMS Beagle which had visited Fernandina Island during the 1800s. The first post office was established in 1909 and served as the community's sole source of mail until it closed in 1963. In 1978, a new school was built on the same site as the old high school and it became known as Sebastian Middle School. On February 1, 1984, Hurricane Timingbee caused extensive damage to both schools, leaving them without electricity or water for several days while they were rebuilt. In 2002, Sebastian voters approved a $5 million bond issue that funded renovations to both schools including new roofs and updated infrastructure. The project was completed in 2006 and renamed Hope High School after then- Principal Rick Hope who helped lead the effort to get it done. The community has seen some growth over the years with an influx of newcomers such as refugees from Syria who have found work here since 2015; however, overall unemployment remains very low despite having few opportunities for advancement outside of townspeople jobs across many fields As one of only two towns in Alachua County not designated as an agricultural area by USDA designation (the other being Live Oak), agriculture plays a relatively minor role here compared to other parts of town where services like grocery stores/restaurants etc are abundant . However there are still a number of businesses that focus on this sector including: pet supplies store; nursery; automotive detailing shop; pool hall; hair salon; tattoo parlour - all clustered around one main intersection near Main Street
