The city used the property for municipal purposes until 1978 when it became part of Naval Air Station (NAVY) Key West. In 1984, NAVY transferred control of the airport to the Escambia County Aviation Authority which has managed it ever since. According to history buffs at Satellite Beach Museum Inc., satellite beach's namesake may have been related to Spanish explorer Don Gaspar de la Gama who visited Pensacola Bay in 1502 during his trip around South America; however there is no concrete evidence that support this claim beyond conjecture or rumor at this time . There are several theories about why electric trolley service began running from Pensacola through mainland Escambia County in 1915; some say because solutions were needed for flood control systems then being developed in those days; others believe that one reason might be due to an opportunity offered by local booster James Fenton who had connections with utilities and business interests in Jacksonville, Florida; nevertheless electric streetcar services ran continuously from Mobile Depot (now known as Gulfport International Airport) all the way down into downtown Pensacola until 1948 when they were discontinued due to budgetary constraints within local government structures across Alabama and Mississippi states alone . In any event, after just two years of operation - starting on December 6th 1915 - electric streetcar service between Mobile Depot and nearby Wainwright Avenue ended completely effective . However , traffic along Uleta Street between Railroad Ave & US 19 Tramway stop still exists today as does a short stretch of Railroad Ave near Terminal Rd ; these remnants form what is now known municipally as 'Old Satellite Beach'. Satellite Beach, Florida was founded on August 25, 1912 by Cuban American fishermen. The town was originally named Isla de las Catas and then Satellite beach. In 1926, the town changed its name to Satellite Beach after a U.S. Naval station that was built there. The Naval Station closed in 1958, and the town became an unincorporated community within Miami-Dade County.
