Satellite Beach is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Satellite Beach was founded on May 15, 1948 by the brothers Harry and Jack Dempsey. The name comes from a small island in the ocean that is now part of Satellite Beach. The first settlers were fishermen who used to go to the island to sell their catches to local residents and also to buy goods from the mainland market. The first houses were built on a small peninsula that made up part of what is now known as Park Avenue. In 1951, the town was annexed into Miami proper and soon began growing rapidly due to its location close to both business districts in downtownMiami and its easy access to Interstate 95 which connected all parts of Florida at that time. By 1960, satellite beach had become an important commercial center with over 20 businesses operating within its boundaries. The early years of satellite beach were difficult for many reasons including World War II which took place nearby and created a lot of rubble in the area; economic instability caused by newly built interstate highways connecting all parts of America;and hurricanes which destroyed homes, crops, businesses and killed people. Nevertheless, through hard work and determination, satellite beach became one of South Florida's most successful towns during the early days of its development. Immediately after annexation into Miami proper in 1951, satellite beach experienced rapid growth due in part to new construction projects initiated by Mayor Manuel Diaz which included widening Gamedge Street (now Aventura Boulevard) leading down from SR 7A (then US 1) so traffic could flow more efficiently through town; building new water towers along SR 7A providing potable water for residences; creating a park called Satellite Park (later renamed Sunrise Park); opening new schools such as Mrs Pritchett Elementary School (later renamed Parker Middle School), Mrs Boggs Intermediate School (later renamed Dillard High School), Junior High Schools like Ocean View Junior High School (later renamed Indian River Senior HS), Stonington Junior HS., Pinecrest Senior HS., Palm Coast Senior HS., Gateway Drive/SR 133/US 1 interchange reconstruction project completed in 1958; addition of a movie theater named "The Ocean" on Sunrise Avenue near Aventura Boulevard . In 1962 when Hurricane Andrew caused widespread damage across south Florida including much of Satellite Beach , Mayor Diaz ordered all businesses within ->South Miami eastbound I-95 off limits while he worked with state troopers on scene.. This order remained in effect until 1984 when it was lifted because no further damage was reported eastbound I-95 . Shortly before his death , Mayor Diaz ordered another project adding two miles long Causeway between Sunrise Ave & Aventura Blvd making it possible for cars entering & exiting ->South Miami from any direction
