Satellite Beach was founded in 1922 by J.C. Penney and his wife, Carrie Chapman Catt. The town was originally named after the Spanish word "satellite." Penney's father had been born in Spain and immigrated to the United States when he was five years old. The couple established a store in Satellite Beach and developed a successful business until Penney left for college in 1923. After leaving college, he returned to work at his father's store but soon realized that he wanted more than just a job. He wanted to make a difference in his community and started working on developing new ways to improve life for others. In 1925, he opened the first post office in Satellite Beach and soon became known as one of the most influential leaders in the town. By 1928, Penney had built two churches and started giving back to the community with donations of money, goods, or services. In 1931, he donated land near the beach for a new high school which would become known as Satellite High School today. ThePenneys also supported many other local organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and helped establish many businesses that still operate today including Sears Roebuck & Co., Penske Motorsports Corporation (later Penske Racing) and Beecham Pharmaceuticals Inc.. In 1936, they donated land north of their store along State Road A1A for what is now known as Gulfstream Park Racetrack which hosted many famous NASCAR races over the years including The Daytona 500®
