There is no doubt that holster history in Satellite Beach, Florida began with the arrival of the Spanish in 1763. The town was founded on a small island near Pensacola, and early residents supplemented their income by selling salt water pistols and hunting rifles to the settlers on mainland Florida. The first holsters were made of leather and had to be worn over clothing to keep them safe from theft. By 1892, however, there was a company based in Mobile, Alabama making holster companies out of hogskin and other materials. Holsters continued to be popular until the late 1800s when they became more common among law enforcement officers. Satellite Beach's connection with holster production began around 1912 when Manuel de Jesus Gomez y Martinez opened his restaurant off US 1 in what is now the business district of Satellite Beach. The restaurant served as a production center for several manufacturers of holsters before it closed its doors in 1938. After Gomez' death, his son took over ownership of the business and continued production until he sold it to Eberhard Ziegler in 1946. From 1946-1969 Ziegler produced many different types of holsters for both law enforcement officers and civilians using an innovative process called " die Casting." This technique involved building an entire holster from die cast metal which allowed for a much more sturdy product than traditional leather Holsters. Satellite Beach, Florida was founded in 1922 by a group of men from Jacksonville, Florida. The town was named for the then-new satellite earth observation satellites that had just been developed by the United States Department of Defense. The first inhabitants of Satellite Beach were transient workers who came to work on the new installation at Eglin Air Force Base. By 1925, the community had grown to include a small grocery store and two churches. In 1929, the first post office opened in Satellite Beach and soon became one of several small towns scattered around Eglin Air Force Base. The 1950s were a time of growth and change for Satellite Beach. A number of businesses began to open up in town, including a meat market and a drive-in theater. In 1957, when the U S Navy moved its main headquarters to Satellite Beach, it also brought with it many new residents and businesses. Many local kids started their careers working at Eglin AFB during this time as well; some went on to become generals or state legislators while others continued their education opportunities after they left service. By 1970, satellite technology had matured sufficiently that new federal facilities were required closer to home so that employees could be located more easily within reach if needed quickly. That year, Satellite Beach incorporated as an independent municipality under state law and began making decisions about its own future destiny – such as whether or not to annex neighboring communities such as Neptune City or Coral Gables – which would have ultimately led to its absorption into Jacksonville proper in 1978. During most of this time (from 1922 through 1978), satellite beach grew primarily because people from Jacksonville worked at Eglin AFB nearby and took advantage of all that what was available hereabouts: shopping malls (such as one built in 1961), job training programs (including aviation ones), access to movie theaters (the only one south of Tampa Bay at that time), restaurants etc., Additionally there were military barracks nearby providing much-needed housing for workers during wartime periods – something that wasn’t always easy or affordable given how far away everything else was back then compared nowdays! But even without annexation by Jacksonville proper; satellite beach would still grow rapidly due solely due to ragtag individuals like myself who would go out each day onto Eglin AFB property & look up properties for sale/lease/investment etc., until eventually finding someone interested enough in buying/developing said land & starting things off again from scratch 🙂
