The next reference to the Naval Base comes in 1904 when Rear Admiral Alfred P. Ricketts, Commandant of the Miami Marine Barracks, visited Satellite Beach and scout for a site for a new Naval Station. In 1910, Commodore David Dixon decided on the location of the present-day National Security Complex at Satellite Beach and ordered construction to begin immediately. From 1912 until 1945, the Naval Station was known as NAS Jacksonville (later USS Jacksonville). As part of World War II, NAS Jacksonville played an important role in coastal defense throughits naval aviation capabilities and support services including radar monitoring and patrol activities off Key West; it also served as headquarters for all military operations pertaining thereto. In 1951 NAS Jacksonville transferred its operational jurisdiction ashore to Camp Blanding which remains its primary focus today; during this time Headquarters Squadron Eleven was activated at NAS Jacksonville as part of this action. The beach was originally named for Daisy's grandmother who had been born in Missouri and died in Florida. The first post office at Satellite Beach was established on October 3, 1922. In 1947 the town became a city and was renamed Satellite Beach, Florida. The original downtown core of the city is still preserved as an example of early 20th century architecture with residential buildings dating back to the 1920s still standing today.
