Satellite Beach, Florida is a small town located in the state of Florida. The population was 5,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of Hernando County and is bordered by Bay City on the north, Satellite Beach on the east, Gulfport on the south, and Belle Isle to the west. The first settlers in Satellite Beach were Major General James A. Ketchum and his family who arrived in January 1825 from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. They built a log cabin on what is now known as Main Street. The Ketchums remained until 1853 when they moved to Belle Isle and died there. Their son-in-law Colonel Robert Ewing established a cattle ranch there which he named for his father-in-law Admiral David Farragut who had been Commodore of Naval Squadron Five during the American Revolution (1775 - 1783). After Farragut's death in 1868, his widow donated land to establish satellite beach near their ranch house as a place where local fishermen could gather to fish for tuna or other seafood resources. In 1886 it was discovered that salt water was washing into an estuary at Bay City which formed when freshwater Lake Okeechobee drained into bay after heavy rains caused damage to its surface resulting in high levels of salt water inside it. This resulted in new interest in salty water resources with businesses establishing themselves around this area such as The Sinking Ship Company which operated out of an old lighthouse located at today's Airport Boulevard just off US 1 between Gandy Boulevard and Gulfstream Avenue) In 1897 oysters were being caught from Mobile Bay by early summer season so Indian Harbor Light House Keeper Mrs Jane Murchison decided to put up a flagpole with an observation platform above low tide mark next door promising free oyster concessions if anyone found any live oysters while fishing off shore The first permanent resident here was Captain John Waddell who arrived on board USS Constitution during her maiden voyage from Bostonophyte Key West on October 15th 1802 He soon began operations as fisherman/whaling master ashore aboard Constitution taking catches both fresh and salt water varieties including several white goby species along with king mackerel some 20 miles offshore When word spread about Waddell's catch everyone wanting one got together forming ghost towns all over Mobile Bay beginning with Indian Harbor most notable among these being Neptune Point Light House keeper Mrs Sarah Goodloe Strouds building herself a small shack complete with oven she continuedcatchng oysters until 1900 Miss Goodloe commerciallyized her catches later becoming known as "Mrs Strouds' Oyster Factory". Satellite Beach actually has two tidal points however due northward from Indian Harbor lies Neptune Point Lighthouse Preserve where you can find artifacts dating back to Spanish era including chisels used for stonecutting within shrine precincts associated with San Antonio de la Laguna Mission founded by Fray José María Arcángel y Ayala circa 1762 CE occupants included Jesuits active also prior thereto numbering more than 50 people plus 12 dogs Akwesasne Indians under guidance of French Conquistador Father Marquette explored area cca 1694 - 1700 seeking missionary work then abandoned due lack thereof winterizing On December 3rd 1901 while anchored offshore off Satellite Beach Captains Jules Verne happened upon stranded shipskipper Harry Herrington RNVR stopped en route from Havana Cuba laden principally with sugar oranges he offered passage giving 400 lira ($2 Uocal) per person each allowing him room aboard ship enabling him explore many new areas never before chartered or encountered This event are considered calendar days leading upupto World War I hostilities starting August 1914 Ends November 11th 1918 .
