By 1935, there were 10 grocery stores along Ocean Boulevard with another 12 locations serving businesses within commuting distance of downtown Jacksonville. In 1941, Gould donated an acre (4 hectares) of undeveloped land north of town to be used for a new high school which became known as "Gould High". Satellite Beach's economy grew due to its location midway between two major seaports: Jacksonville and Tampa Bay; its wide open beach front; easy access to paved roads; and its plentiful seafood resources including crabbing, fishing,and hunting opportunities on Black Lake." In 1965-1966 Satellite Beach built an all-weather concrete runway at Naval Station Brevard using federal funds provided through the International Development Association program called "Airlines for America". This project increased commercial airline service available to the area not only during hurricane season but also during other times whenBrevard was closed out by bad weather or military exercises being conducted nearby (such as Operation Neptune's Spear). The airport has since been renamed NAS Canaveral Air Force Station Airport after then-Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara who visited Brevard in 1966 while overseeing Vietnam War efforts." As time passed more businesses moved into suburban areas outside the city limits while residential zoning changed so that many homes were purchased with plans to build condos rather than live near the ocean or beach which made it difficult for people who had invested their money in coastal real estate to see it go up for sale again." In recent years some largescale development projects have taken place such as: construction of a shopping center off I-95 called "Satellite Cove" which will include anchor tenants such as Sears Holdings Inc., JCPenney Co., Macy's Inc., Sears Department Store USA LLC., plus several hundred jobsites across 6 acres (2 hectares)." Today satellite beach is still home to some small businesses that continue doing well despite difficult economic times but most importantly its coastline remains unprotected from hurricanes like Irma or Maria because Brevard County has agreed not sell any property within 100 miles (160 kilometers)"
