The first train service arrived here from Tampa on July 12th 1896 when an engine pulled out of Tallahassee Station to bring passengers and goods from Tampa via Port Charlotte to Indian Harbour Beach where they caught another train back upriver to Tampa before continuing their journey In 1907-1908 there was construction work done on what would become known as “The Shelling Project” which connected Ft Myers Channel with Marathon Bay making it possible for ships loading supplies at Miami Harbor to come ashore here instead of having to go all the way around Cape Coral This brought new life both physically and economically to Sarasota as businesses started popping up all around town catering specifically towards tourists who were now able to stay close without any hassle Eventually enough Infrastructure was built up so that electric trains could be run between downtown SarasOTA (then known as Government House) and various shopping malls across central FL including Marriott Marquis Garden City Hotel & Marina – now Renaissance Disney World Resort – giving locals access not onlyto jobs but also free local transportation
