Sarasota, Florida is located in the heart of the Miami-Dade County area and has been a center for scuba diving and telescope ownership for over 50 years. The city was named after Captain John Smith who sighted land on Aug. 14, 1559, during his voyage from England to South America. The first scuba Dive Masters Association (later the American Scuba Diving Federation) was formed here in 1954 and Sarasota became one of its members in 1958. In 1964, the city voted to become an official member of the American Boating and Hunting Assn., which remains its membership today. In 1978, then Mayor Bob Nichols dedicated a new $1 million facility at Pier 21 which housed both the Sarasota Aquarium and two state-of-the-art 6 meter Marine telescopes called "The Snapper" and "The Gull". The telescopes were used by local schoolchildren as part of National Geographic's "Slideshow Of Our Time" program that featured everyday items from around the world during 1978. It is also said that this was when city officials decided to make Sarasota their focus for optics education with a new Eye School/Oculus Room being built on City Hall Grounds in 1984.
