In the early 1800s, firearms were not common in Sarasota. However, there are references to gunsmiths and shooters being in the area as early as 1798. In 1836, a land grant was made to James White by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The grant included 640 acres of land east of the Hillsborough River. This allowed White to build a home and start his business lumbering on the property. Over time, other landowners in the area acquired more land for hunting and fishing purposes. As these activities picked up, so too did firearm use in this part of Florida. By 1860, firearms were being used regularly for hunting and target shooting in Sarasota County. In 1877, an ordinance was passed regulating handguns within city limits (now Sarasota). This ordinance prohibited ownership or carrying of handguns without a license from city officials. It is interesting to note that this law still exists today! In 1898, a new courthouse was built in downtown Sarasota with funds provided by Judge John Soward (later Mayor). At this time guns were no longer allowed inside but they could be brought into town for storage or display under certain circumstances such as when it was raining outside or during public holidays! In 1907-1908, an attempt was made to create a state park called “The Lakes” along the Hillsborough River south of downtown Sarasota. However, due to financial constraints at that time it failed; however future efforts would lead to its creation over 50 years later! This section will focus on shootings which took place within city limits between 1903 and 1978 inclusive!
