Sarasota, Florida was founded in 1837 by Captain James W. McLaren and his wife, Mary. The first post office in Sarasota was established in 1840. The city was named for the Sarasota River which flowed through it. In 1853, a canal was built to connect the Gulf of Mexico with the Indian River Lagoon and Sarasota became an important commercial center. In 1907, the United States Postal Service moved its main post office from Jacksonville to Sarasota and renamed it the "Sarasotta Post Office." On May 10, 1908, the first automobile shipment from Tampa went through Sarasota's port and is now known as "The Day-By-Day Carriers' Delivery of Automobiles." In 1933, Hurricane Frances destroyed most of downtown Sarasota and left much of what is now downtown unharmed. The damage caused by Frances made it difficult for businesses to reopen and forced many people out of town. Today there are few visible reminders of what happened during that time; however, some heavy machinery still remains at one point near where most businesses once stood. When World War II began on December 8th 1941 local soldiers were called to help with coastal defenses but did not start arriving until late January 1942 due to shortages of supplies brought overland from Florida USMARC depot at Fort Pierce Naval Air Station on Flagler Beach
