This system allowed shotguns to be fired from any position within reach. Later in 1827, Colonel Gabriel Biddle erected a small cannon on Pensacola Bay called the "Biddle Cannon". This cannon was designed to fire shot up into the air and then return down onto its target below. To use this cannon, you needed to remove the ballast from the breech and add it back as you needed ammunition. In order to do this, you had to use two sets of hands because you couldn't control how far away your target was while firing. This cannons proved too dangerous for military use and were eventually replaced by more traditional artillery pieces like cannons and mortars during World War II. However, some smaller versions of these guns still remain today on private property in Sarasota County!
Sarasota, Florida is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lee County. The city has been part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Area since 2002 and it is one of its most populous areas. The area that now Sarasota was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century as part of what is now Sarasota-Bradenton metropolitan area. In 1847, a group of British traders founded Fort Myers on the coast south of present-day Sarasota and named it for William Hernando de Soto's flagship HMS "Teresa" which had completed a crossing from Cuba to South America in 1795. The town grew up around these two institutions and gradually diversified into other businesses until World War II when both Fort Myers and Sarasota became military bases serving troops stationed in the Caribbean and Asia respectively. In 1946, Fort Myers merged with Bradenton to become one municipality. In 1952, the City of Bradenton annexed much of what is now Sarasota County including parts of Pinellas County (including Clearwater) following annexation proceedings led by then-Mayor John Holdren who wanted to make his home more accessible to residents within easy commuting distance from larger cities like Tampa Bay Airport or St Petersburg Naval Station. After several years during which development stalled due to lack of funds, an agreement was reached between Mayor Holdren and developers Harry Daugherty (a developer originally from Chicago) and Bill Tatum (brother-in-law of Governor Reubens) under which Daugherty would donate land west side Of Hillsborough Street (now Douglas Road), just east off US 1 near mile marker 239 on Interstate 4runner so that Tatum could build a shopping center, apartments or office buildings on top while Daugherty would develop land east side behind Hillsborough Street where he planned to build his yacht harbor facility/marinas called "Hillsborough Point". This deal finally brought development back online in 1984 with construction beginning on what is today known as downtown SarasOTA - comprising three blocksNW corner Main Street & W First Avenue; two blocksE corner Second Avenue & W Third Avenue; and four blocksW corner Main Street & E Third Avenue - giving rise today to FlagLER Place mall located immediately NE corner Main & Flagler Streets across from MARTA train station

On July 15, 1775, the first European settlers in Sarasota County arrived. They were white men, led by Captain James Cook, who had discovered the Florida Keys and named them after his captain’s ship HMS Resolution. The first European to live in Sarasota County was Nicholas Fenton, a British military officer and naturalist who built a home on what is now First Street in downtown Sarasota. In 1867, the county seat was moved from Fenton to present-day Sarasota. On December 2 of that year, the county government was organized into a board of commissioners with five members elected at large for two-year terms. The growth of oil and gas exploration throughout central Florida during the early 1900s led to increased population growth in Sarasota County and its need for additional services such as water supplies and schools. In 1916, construction began on the old Coconut Grove detention center which would become one of largest public works projects in history. The project served as an important steppingstone in local education reform and later became known as “The College Park Project” due to its connection to then- colleges/universities nearby such as US Naval Academy and Johns Hopkins University. During World War II, many residents raised money through Operation Crossroads to support war efforts by contributing food stamps, gasoline coupons or other items they could not afford to buy outright. Manyibel Sawaya is credited with being one of the first people to startodaing chain stores called "Sarasotans All You Can Eat" across town from her original grocery store on Fourth Street near today's Aquinas Catholic School buildings - precursor to modern day Walmart Supercenter!
