Sarasota, Florida is a city located on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 184,715 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sarasota County and part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The name Sarasota comes from Spanish meaning "sandy bay" or "estuary". The word Sarasota was given to the community by Captain John A. Hulbert in 1837 during his survey for a new military post on the gulf coast. Captain Hulbert named the community after Carlos Santana, a naval officer who had fought with General Antonio López de Santa Anna during Mexico's war for independence from Spain in 1813. In 1881, John Fenton drew up plans for what would become downtown Sarasota and donated land to the town charter formers. On July 1, 1888, downtown Sarasota became an incorporated municipality under state law (the first such municipio in Florida). Downtown became one of two business districts in Sarasota County - other being Plantation District - making it one stop for goods and people traveling through both areas. The city's first mayor was Jens Jensen and its first council member were Wm Noland and Herman Weiser (1901-02). In 1939 Mayor Rolfe Sievers appointed Harry Sievers as City Manager effective January 1st that year which made him responsible for all aspects of municipal government including budgeting, purchasing supplies for City operations and providing services such as police protection within city limits On October 14th 1941 Mayor Sievers died suddenly at home after years of service to Sarasota With his death authorization came mayoral powers to fill any vacancy until a new mayor could be elected by popular vote . Dr. Willis Quesada took office as Mayor effective November 3rd 1941 following a special election held on December 4th with no major party candidate winning an outright majority over anyone else running . As DrSQuesada served he also filled any remaining mayoral vacancies until Manual Vargas assumed office on February 17th 1944 when Vargas became mayor following Governor Manuel Diaz’s sudden resignation due to health concerns

In 1834, the United States acquired Florida from Spain as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The following year, General Andrew Jackson captured and burned Havana, Cuba, which opened up new lands for settlement in what is now Sarasota County. A post office called Sarasota was established in 1835, and remained in operation until 1961.
