Sarasota, Florida is a small town on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 9,452 at the 2010 census. Sarasota is located in Monroe County and has a land area of only 8 square miles. It lies within the Sarasota-Bradenton metropolitan area which had a population of 11,811 as of 2000. The first European to visit Sarasota was Don Diego de Laguna in 1539. The name "Sarasota" meaning "safe haven" was given to it by its Spanish explorers because they were afraid that pirates would attack their ships during the time they were exploring the Florida Keys. In 1845, Colonel James Hogg established Fort Hogg on Bay Road near present-day downtown Sarasota after he discovered oil drilling operations being conducted offshore from Tampa Bay. By 1901, there were over 20 businesses in downtown Sarasata with an estimated payroll of $10 million per year. The early transportation options for coming to Sarasota were boat or canoe trips down the Gulfstream Stream or flying overland from Mobile, Alabama and Jacksonville, Florida. Ferry services began running along Bay Drive in 1905 and became common throughout the years due to salt water intrusion into inland waterways caused by proper use of septic tanks and other public works programs instituted during World War II; however, most ferry service ceased operations between 1947 and 1951 due to concerns about fire hazards associated with open flames on boats moored offshore while waiting for passengers or goods to come aboard from landlocked towns such as Tallahassee (then called Lake City). It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Hollywood Combined Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of what is now Sarasota were people called "Moses" or "Pete." They built their house near where present day First Baptist Church and Park Avenue are located in 1823. In 1828 they moved to what is now Main Street and Pines Boulevard. In 1831 they founded Indian Creek Academy which became Seminole College in 1906. On July 4th, 1888, a group of white men from Jacksonville named themselves the Committee for Reconstruction and platted what would become known as Sarasota County on November 3rd following an order from President James K. Polk that all former Confederate States be reincorporated into the Union as Florida. However, it wasn't until 1893 when landowner Aiken donated some land to build a courthouse that development could begin in earnest; however this didn't happen until 1903 with the opening of Sarasota's first post office with name Islamorada (later changed to Islamorada). By 1925 there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Sarasota with employment reaching 300 individuals from all walks of life including athletes such aspineapple growersand truck drivers; airlines such as Pan American World Airways(PAA) had services based out of Sarasota International Airport since 1947 but only started passenger service again in 1977 after deregulation caused many small airports across America to open up alongwith larger ones like Miami Beach which experiencing rapid growth at that time due largely to tourism . In 1955 there was an increase seen with annexations by neighboring counties resulting in new towns being established such as Port Charlotte (1957), Venice (1958), Dunedin (1959), Bradenton (1960), Cape Coral (1962) and Fort Myers Beach (1964). After two years discovery was made by attorneys general from both states no damages were ever awarded although public opinion seemedto have favored awarding damages given how much harm had been done without proper notification or compensation
