The first Europeans to visit Sarasota were the Spanish in 1565. The area was originally inhabited by the Arawak people who lived along the coast of Florida. The English explorer, John Cabot, visited Sarasota in 1497 and named it after his friend and mentor, Bartholomew Bachelard. After Spain gained independence from Portugal in 1821, they began to explore Florida and found that there was a rich phosphate mine on the island of Marco Island. In 1827, Captain John Stennis landed at Sarasota with his flagship USS Constitution on a quest for oil off the Gulf of Mexico. He discovered what is now known as Tampa Bay and named it after his home state of Georgia. By 1830, business at Marco Island had died down and the American government decided to sell it back to Portugal for $3 million. However, this did not stop Portuguese explorationists from looking for new land to exploit in southcentral Florida so an American company purchased Marco Island from its original owner in 1835 and became known as United States Exploration Company (USEC). USEC leased two other islands from Portugal – Madeira Island (now Pedra da Fuca) and Santa Croce – before starting production at their new site on Sunnyside Plantation near Sarasota in 1840. In 1845-1846, USEC built a wharf on Cross Keys Key which allowed them access to Tampa Bay through open water but they eventually abandoned this project due to financial difficulties. By 1850, USEC had produced over 1 million barrels of oil! They also developed a system that used horse drawn carts hauled by horses across salt marshes to extract oil shale which was later refined into gasoline!
