By 1830, sugarcane plantations had become common throughout south Florida because of efforts by Governor James Kenedy to promote agriculture as a means of creating new revenue during his term as governor from 1830-34; soon after this periodthere appeared on local maps for the first time Indian Plantations such as those found along Lake Okeechobee
Sarasota County, Florida was created on December 7, 1845 from the southern part of what is now Sarasota County, Florida. The county seat was Sarasota. The first courthouse in the original county was built in 1846 and it remains evidence of early government activity in this area. The first post office in the county was established in 1847 and it still stands today. On January 1, 1907, the easternmost tip of Sarasota County became a part of Miami-Dade County.
