Sarasota, Florida is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 23,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Sarasota was first settled by Native American Indians in the late eighteenth century. In 1838, a group of Americans led by Colonel John C. Steed bought land near what is now downtown Sarasota and established Fort Brooke as an outpost on the mouth of River Manatee to protect British interests in southeastern Florida. In 1840, Captain James Cook discovered and named Lake George after Governor Thomas Pinckney of Georgia, who had seen it while exploring inlandFlorida. The British abandoned their holdings in Florida during the Seminole Wars (1835-1841), moving back into Georgia instead. In 1845, General Zachary Taylor ordered General Andrew Jackson to invade central Cuba and capture Havana; Jackson's forces arrived too late to stop Spanish troops from entering the city and taking possession of Cuban stores and infrastructure. As a result of this military engagement and political instability in Cuba following Taylor's victory over Spanish Emperor Juan José de Sucre at Batista's Battle of San Lorenzo de la Vega on October 10th 1846 (the "Battle of O'Brien"), American settlers began arriving in earnest to flood what would become Sarasota County with white people eager for property opportunities along Florida's newly opened coastline. By 1860, there were more than 2200 residents living in Sarasota County – more than any other county east of Jacksonville! On November 1st 1861 officers from Fort Brooke led by Major Augustus Pritchard surrendered to Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg at Whatcom Headwaters about 8 miles south-southwest of present day downtown Sarasota. Aftermath: all US troops were driven out except for a detachment under Colonel Wm Halsey which remained until relieved by Admiral Perry's carrier force on November 25th 1865 just before Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House.. One hundred years later: On September 17th 2018 Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced he will be running for re-election against incumbent Pam Bondi
