In 1892, the city of Sarasota established its own armORY with a select group of local businesses contributing funding. The armORY was used as the training ground for new police officers. In 1903, gun magazine publisher E.B. Farnsworth and his son-in-law John Hickey opened an ammo store on West Main Street in Sarasota. This Ammo Store was the first ammunition store in Florida that sold rounds of Ammunition by weight instead of just rounds of ammunition. At this time there were only a few small gun stores throughout the state and it was difficult for consumers to find quality ammunition at affordable prices. The Ammo Store continued to be open until 1967 when it closed due to financial troubles. However, through hard work and dedication by both owners John Hickey and Eben Farnsworth, their memory lives on in our community thanks to their legacy of excellence in Ammunition salesmanship!

Sarasota, Florida is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 153,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The area that now forms Sarasota was first settled by Native American people in the late 18th century. The town of Venice was founded in 1824 and became an incorporated town on December 15, 1830. In 1876, Sarasota was made a county seat with a population of 713. The countys boundaries were revised in 1893 to include all of present-day Sarasota County as well as Pinellas and Hillsborough counties to the south and east respectively. On November 16, 1907, much of what is now Sarasota County was knocked out from under Tampa Bay when Hurricane Gilbert hit the area; it re-emerged as part of Tampa Bay after Gilbert dissipated over land to the north and west. By 1930 there were over 2,000 businesses in downtown Sarasota with a total payroll above $100 million! On July 1st 1942 during World War II bombardments throughout South Florida killed or wounded more than 3,500 people including 519 Americans who lived and worked in Sarasota proper; most died along US 41 just north of downtown (the original name for US 41). One reason why so many people were killed or injured near downtown may have been because there was no real protection against aerial bombardment other than concrete barriers which could be destroyed by bombs or artillery fire without causing injuries (especially since these fires often started from aircraft flying overhead)). In 1948 Downtown #1 around Main Street became known as "Downtown USA" due to an advertising campaign by local merchants led by grocer Harry Snyder Jr.. This name stuck until 1959 when it reverted back to its original moniker - "Downtown Sarasotans". In 1988 it again changed its name - this time becoming "SarasOTA." Today Downtown's nickname reflects its unique character: diverse oneness through history & culture together with modern amenities such as high-tech businesses & dining options within easy walking distance

Recently renovated portions of downtown include The Courtyard by Marriott hotel/casino complex; Mariott Marquis Hotel; ABC News headquarters; Sears Tower - now known as One Financial Center . Additionally new developments are ongoing around Ybor City district including highly anticipated Riverwalk restaurant project slated for completion in 2020 adjacent to downtown's iconic CenturyLink Field sports stadium
Sarasota was founded in 1834 by Colonel John Brooks, a United States Army officer. The town became part of the Florida Territory in 1838 and then the state of Florida in 1907. In 1914, Sarasota was designated as the capital of the newly created county of Sarasota County.
