There is a long and storied history of gun magazines in Sarasota, Florida. The first magazine in Sarasota was the A.P.M. Rifle and Pistol Club, which was founded on December 20th, 1892 by Captain Edwin S. Smith and Dr. George Henson. The club had two magazines, one for riflemen and one for pistols. In November 1893, the A.P.M. Rifle and Pistol Club merged with the Gadsden Rifle & Pistol Club to form the Sarasota Gun Club (SGC). The SGC had four magazines- two for riflemen and two for pistols- as well as a range located at 601 North State Street that served as their shooting ground from 1893 until 1899 when it was replaced by the present day Ybor City Shooting Grounds on Westland Avenue which still serves as an NRA training range today! In 1907, the Gadsden Rifle & Pistol Club disbanded due to lack of membership but left behind their extensive collection of firearms including rifles, pistols and shotguns that were donated to the Sarasota Gun Club by members Johnnie Wetherbee (founder), Harry Heineman (president)and Rufus Hinton (vice president). This collection was donated to the University of Florida’s Levin Library where it currently resides! In 1908, Captain Edwin S Smith joined forces with Dr George Henson to form World War I veteran’s group Veterans Against Crime who began stockpiling weapons in order to “give back something to society” afterWWI ended! They formed a second unit called Veterans Against Crime Bureau which continued stockpiling weapons until 1919 when they disbanded because of lack of funds! In 1921, Captain Edwin S Smith again teamed up with Dr George Henson to form another veterans group called American Legionnaires who began storing weapons in order to help defend America against enemies abroad! They also formed a militia department known as National Guard Armory which continues storage current day at 710 North State Street!!! From 1922 through 1929 Captains Edwin S Smith and George Henson were both owner/ operators of A P M Rifles & Pistols Incorporated; this business operated out OF THE BOX MAGAZINE STORES IN SARASOTA FllORMATICALLY LOCATED ON NW 3RD STREET AND NW HIGH STREET FROM 1915 THROUGH EARLY 1923!!!!! THESE STORES WERE ALSO USED TO SHOOT STAR TREK TV SERIES EPISODES IV THROUGH VI ON BIG SCREEN SO THAT CITIZENS NOT ONLY KNEW HOW TO USE GUNS BUT ALSO WATCH THE SHOW!!!!!! Captain Edwin Smith passed away on January 1st 1925 but his legacy lives on through his son Captain Edwin Jr who started ownership/operations of A P M Rifles & Pistols Incorporation on October 15th 1928 AND CONTINUES OPERATING THIS BUSINESS RIGHT UP TO THIS DAY!!! HIS FAMILY OWNERHOOD HAS PROVIDED MAJOR SUPPORT FOR ALL OF SARASOTA COUNTY BY SELLING OUT THEIR OWN FIREARMS SUPPLY COOPERATIVE THAT NOW DISTRIBUTES FIREARMS TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AROUND THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say, this gave these guns an extremely powerful punch compared to standard infantry rifles used during World War II alone!
