Sarasota has always been known for its beautiful beaches; there are six main ones: Campos de Bahia (which borders Fort Myers), Clearwater Beach, Dolphin Coast Park, Gulf Breeze Pier/Gulfwalk Pier State Park (formerly Arroyo Seco), Pompano Beach/Pompano Key State Park (formerly Boca Raton), and Indian Harbour Beach which contains both Anchor Point Marina & Resort & Atrium Resort located within walking distance of each other on North Gables Drive adjacent to Government Center Boulevard

In 2006, Sarasota announced plans to annex parts of Manatee County (in South side) with hopes that this would increase its population size to 100,000 residents by 2020.
The Sarasota area has a long and diverse history, dating back to the early Seminole Indians. In 1836, Captain John C. O’Sullivan of the U.S. Coast Guard discovered the island of Sarasota while on his way to New Orleans. He named it after the Arabic word سرطان meaning "sarasota" (a salt water estuary). The first permanent settler in what is now Sarasota County was James Denny in 1839. Denny built a cabin on Ponce de Leon Boulevard near wherepresent-day Gratz Park is today. The first post office in Sarasota County was established in 1853, and was called "New Port Royal". In 1865, Captains George DeMott and Augustus Herron purchased land east of present day Gratz Park from Chief Osceola for $2 per acre. After years of development, Fort Myers became the county seat in 1893 when circuit court jurisdiction was moved from New Port Royal to that location. During World War II, some 20% of all agricultural production within Florida came from Sarasota County due to its proximity to naval bases and military airfields. The largest employer in local industries during this time was Phillips Petroleum Company which located its headquarters at Bradenton Naval Air Station (later Goodyear Air Force Base) across the street from Ringling Bros.) Circus Complex until 1957 when it relocated to Miramar AFB adjacentto Proctor & Gamble Headquarters prior to its closure as an Departmental Plant in 1984; both locations are now part of Greater Miramar Management District attraction district managed by Mariott Properties Incorporated In 1978, state legislators enacted a law that created Hillsborough County with portions of Sarasota County as its nucleus . As a result of this change in government structure, many businesses within downtown Sarasota were no longer able to operate because they were incorporated into Hillsborough County instead of continued operation under their original company name or address within city limits . However , there have been few large-scale changes since 1978 other than new county boundaries which have not had any significant impact on local economy or community life
