From 1859 until 1901, this community was called Punta Cana because General Antonio Lopez de la Vega who commanded Spanish forces during the American Civil War lived hereabouts while stationed at Camp San Carlos Borromeo on Pensacola Bayou After years of discussion between various railroad companies about merging their efforts into one large network,,the Tampa and West Palm Beach Railway merged with two other companies forming what would become Southern Railway Company in 1912 In 1916 Southwestern Electric Power Company (SEPCO) constructed an electric power plant on White Sands Lake adjacent to today's Sarasotta Marina . This important facility helped spur economic growth in Sarasota throughout World War II and beyond In December 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in more than 118,000 casualties including many civilians who were killed or injured by US bombing raids over North Carolina On January 3rd 1945 President Harry S Truman signed Executive Order 99999 creating Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to bring all Japanese nationals remaining in America into custody This led to an influx of Japanese-Americans living in Sarasota as well as elsewhere within Florida
The city of Sarasota, Florida was founded in 1875 by Captain George Bowen. The area that is now Sarasota was first inhabited by the Apalachee Indians. In 1881, the United States bought the land from the Apalachee and named it Marathon County after Andrew Marvell's poem, "The Marvellous Life of John Fenton." In 1895, a golf course was built on what is now Airport Boulevard in downtown Sarasota. The City of Sarasota annexation of neighboringBradenton occurred in 1938.
