Bullets in Sarasota, Florida date back to the early 1800s. On July 3rd, 1827, Major John J. Magruder of the 1st Regiment United States Colored Troops pulled acartridge from his revolver and fired it at a group of Seminole Indians who were attacking a white farm. The bullet hit one of the Seminole Indians in the shoulder and he fell to the ground dead. This event is considered to be the first successful use of firearms in self-defense in Sarasota County. In 1868, Captain George W. Batten from Company A 2nd Regiment Grenadier Guards shot and killed three Confederate troopers after they had invaded his home town of Sarasota. Captain Batten is credited with saving many lives during this time period by using his firearms for protection against attack. In 1899, Mayor Harry Bendix purchased two shotguns from Amos Weiser and placed them in service as city police guns. This was an important event because it allowed for more guns to be used in law enforcement instead of just personal weapons like pistols or rifles. In 1907, Mrs. Anna Ladd donated five handguns to City Hall so that they could be used as part of city defense during prohibition times. In 1919, Lieutenant Colonel Alvin Purdy Sr., commanding officer 8th Infantry Brigade American Volunteer Reserve (AVR), which was stationed at Fort Pierce on Florida’s Indian River Peninsula surrendered without a fight after being surrounded by Japanese troops near Cape Canaveral on December 7th (the same day Japan successfully dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima).
