Sarasota, Florida is a small town located in the state of Florida. The population was 12,846 at the 2000 census and 14,487 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sarasota-Bradenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Captain John Sitton in 1826 as a trading post on Sarasota Bay. The name derived from Sarasota River which flows through it. In 1835, Captain Sitton donated land to build a municipal courthouse and jail in honor of his friend and mentor Judge Samuel Shaw. The first election for mayor took place on November 3rd, 1835 and James Weldon won with 98% of the vote. In 1888, Captain John Sitton's heirs gifted additional land to the town for its current location adjacent to Sarasota Harbor. In 1925,Captain Sitton's wife donated another tract of land to form what is now known as Southside Park. A canal was built through central Sarasota in 1849 which served as an important transportation corridor for goods between Tampa and Fort Myers until 1937 when it was replaced by State Road 881 (SR 881). The area around downtown Sarasota became known as "the business district." Many large corporations such as IBM were established here during the late 19th century before moving away or being taken over by other companies during World War I and World War II respectively. Downtown Sarasotans celebrated their centennial anniversary in 2008 with events such as a parade down Main Street followed by a fireworks display at Pine Point Park off Holland Avenue
