In 1911 Sarasota became an incorporated town when it voted to secede from neighboring Manatee County while still being part of Miami-Dade County; however this secession too was later voided by county commissioners because they felt that incorporation would not be possible without concurrence from both counties' governments as well as agreement from residents themselves about what should happen next within their borders. In 1931 Sarasota annexed Big Pine Key which had been part of Manatee County for over 100 years prior thereto when that county lost all power to Hillsborough County after becoming bankrupt during prohibition era thereby ending county government thereabouts; likewise Big Pine Key reverted back into an unincorporated community within Sarasota effective January 1st following passage by voters of a referendum authorizing annexation pursuant to state law No.(R) 3362 (1931). On December 5th 1916 FDOT awarded a contract for construction of a new dam across Lee River at present day Third Street & Lee Highway just south of downtown Sarasota which would create Lake Okeechobee - giving future city fathers such hope for better water availability for homes and industry - but due to World War I funding issues no such dam ever materialized or even began construction despite numerous attempts by contractors including those associated with GEICO insurance Co., The total cost eventually reached $22 million dollars including interest payments totaling $5 million dollars dating back to 1922! As per article dated February 25th 1975 in The Herald Tribune who at that time also managed marketing/advertising functions for GMC: "The money went into building roads and bridges instead" Eventually resulting in major flooding problems alongLeeRiverand elsewhere caused largely by rootcanal development pushing surface water deep underground creating some truly heinous engineering disasters likestructural collapseofbridgescompletedatrelievedby lowering cofferdam! In 1951 City Manager Hargrave resigned after four years leading up to his successor's appointment James Pappagello who led City government until he left office on May 6th 1962 effective June 30th having served six months shy thereof only days after winning election given no opposition!!! Pappagello himself would leave office abruptly less than two months latereffective July 15th upon learning his predecessor had falsified records related To expenses incurred while serving as Mayor
On February 15, 1900, the first organized football game in Sarasota was played between the Sarasota High School and Vero Beach High School. The game resulted in a 12-0 victory for Vero Beach. In 1907, the first interscholastic football championship game was played in Sarasota. The game pitted the neighboring schools of West Palm Beach and Venice against each other. Venice won by a score of 10-7. In 1912, the Florida Athletic Union (FAU) founded its own football conference which included Sarasota County teams from both high school and college levels. In 1925, FAU disbanded after only one season due to financial difficulties.
