Smith opened a large frame rifle factory in downtown Sarasota. He manufactured military rifles and shotguns for use by the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. After the war, Smith continued to produce firearms until his death in 1893. His company left behind a legacy of manufacturing quality airguns and sporting rifles for consumers around the world.

The City of Sarasota was established on November 2, 1892 by commissioners from three adjoining counties: Monroe, Polk and Levy. The first settlers to this area were French Canadians who arrived in 1763 as part of the Expedition under General James K. Polk during the American Revolution. They soon after founded a small town called "Pinellas" on what is now State Road 441 near today's downtown Sarasota. In 1892, commissioners from three adjoining counties – Monroe, Polk and Levy – decided to establish a new city for themselves within their respective boundaries with no reference to Pinellas or any other municipality therein - an unheard of act at that time! The resulting city had its beginning with only 400 residents but quickly grew into one of the most important cities in Southwest Florida due to its railroad access and business opportunities available throughout the region. Today’s downtown Sarasota is home to over 100 businesses including several banks and large retailers such as Sears and JCPenney along with many smaller businesses providing essential services within walking distance such as post office, law office & pharmacy; restaurant/bar scenes; health club; movie theater (Cinemark); golf course; etc., making it an excellent place for locals and visitors alike to findaspace! Sarasota is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 82,284 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Tampa Bay Area. The first European settlement in what is now Sarasota County was by Spanish explorers in 1565. In 1836, Congressman James K. Polk and his wife Martha Cottage established Fort Brooke on Charlotte Harbor as a military post to protect American shipping interests during the Seminole Wars. A town named after General Andrew Jackson (1808-1860) and his home were founded in 1849 near present day downtown Sarasota; it became known as Jacksonville after General Jackson’s death. The first churches were built in Sarasota beginning in 1848 by Presbyterians and Congregationalists; Methodist services began being held there in 1860. The growth of paper production within the area led to an influx of Germans who started calling themselves "Sarasotans" around 1880-1900. By 1912, over 60% of the populace identifying themselves as German had moved to Sarasota from other parts of Florida or South America. In 1922, Mayor John Hargrave proposed annexing Lakeland Village into Sarasota proper so that it could become a more centralized community with better public services and facilities; however, this proposal was not successful due to opposition from residents living on both sides of Dayton Street between Commercial Avenue and Harrison Street which ran through the heart of Lakeland Village (now called Estero). In response to this petition, Mayor Hargrave ordered City Engineer Jules Fenton to design a plan for annexation that would be acceptable to all parties involved; this plan eventually became known as “The Strip Plan” because it outlined how much land would need to be annexed for each household within City limits – ultimately resulting in only about one-third full annexation . A new courthouse was dedicated on November 14th 1916 just east of downtown SarasOTA thanks largely to donations from local farmers and businessmen including Arthur Ashe Sr., William Dickey Jr., Ernest Hemingway and others associated with that era's "boomtown" movement
