A group of men from Sanford founded a cattle ranch near Clearwater in 1903 and named it after General John J. Pershing who had played an important role in suppressing Native American resistance during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The ranch became well known for its high quality beef until it was sold to Al Castilla Properties Inc., based in Plant City, Florida in 1978. In 1959, Hurricane Donna struck Florida as a Category 4 hurricane; damage caused by her made much of central and southernFlorida uninhabitable for months after her landfall on May 3rd; however, most residents were able to return home over time due to military husbandry assistance programs administered by FEMA Sandy hit two days later making direct hits on land areas including parts of downtown St Petersburg before dissipating over neighboring Gulf Coast communities
