Sanford is a city in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood metropolitan area. The first people to live in Sanford were Spanish settlers from St. Augustine who arrived in 1795. By 1810, English and Irish immigrants had also settled in the town. There were two schools in Sanford during its early years: one for white children and one for Indian children. In 1827, Sanford incorporated as a town under the name of "Seminole" because of its location onSeminole Bayou (now Orange Blossom Trail). A total of thirteen businesses were chartered within Sanford until 1875 when only five remain today — four banks and one grocery store. The first post office was established in 1829 and served until 1907; it was moved to its current location on Lawton Avenue near Magnolia Boulevard after that year's incorporation by ordinance. In 1886, when Seminole County became part of Florida, Sanford became an unincorporated community within that county line with a population of just three residents (two men and one woman). The first school building in Sanford was built on what is now Fairbanks Road about two miles east of town center; it burned down circa 1896 but was rebuilt soon afterwards using local lumber and plaster techniques which are still visible today around the corner from the original building on Seminary Lane - now Good Samaritan Hospital! At this time only white students could attend school there due to segregation laws at that time; however soon after black students too started attending school here through various means such as buses or busing into neighboring towns! Today most all public education is provided by Seminole County School Districts inside or outside of corporate boundaries - making our city even more diverse than ever before! In 1918 another school building was erected on Ninth Street downtown - again using local lumber and plaster techniques! This property remains currently used as Pompano Beach High School's gymnasium today! Most recently (2006), a brand new library/community center has been constructed adjacent to Pompano Beach High School across Orange Blossom Trail next door to their old football stadium - making this historic site even more popular for shopping & entertainment options!! Finally – back then – there wasn't any internet access so you had to go out & buy your paperbacks from either Captain Cook Books or some other locally owned store!!! hahaha
The town of Sanford was founded in 1835 by Major General John C. Sanford, a Union general during the American Civil War. The town rapidly grew due to its location on the Florida Gulf Coast and its natural resources including timber, cotton, and saltpeter. In 1851, Sanford became an organized municipality and in 1868 it annexed the adjacent community of Live Oak. In 1907, Sanford incorporated as a city. As the city grew, it developed a comprehensive public education system with six high schools (grades 9 through 12), two junior colleges (University of Central Florida and Miami Dade College), and four municipal libraries. In 1965, Sanford merged with neighboring town of Fort Myers to form the present-day city of Fort Myers Beach.
