In 1868, Sanford annexed Pinellas County and became the county seat of that county. In 1905, the City of Sanford merged with Hillsborough County and became one municipality with a population of 145,000 people. On January 1, 1907, the City of Sanford merged with Hillsborough County again to form St Petersburg-Hillsborough County Municipality which had a population of 538,000 people. On January 1st 2009 this municipality was renamed to Palm Beach-Broward-Palm Beach County Municipality after being ratified by voters in an election held November 3rd 2008. On December 15th 1941 during World War II as part of Operation Neptune's Spear American forces bombed Japanese military installations at Kenedy Point Naval Air Station located in what is now Palm Beach Gardens
