Sanford is a town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,237 at the 2010 census. The name Sanford comes from Spanish meaning "haunted place". It was first settled in 1837 by Portuguese immigrants. Sanford is located on the north-central coast of Florida about 20 miles (32 km) east of Jacksonville and 50 miles (80 km) south of Gainesville. The townsite that would become Sanford was surveyed by George Washington Smith in 1837 as part of a land grant to his brother Jameson Smith. Jameson had purchased 2,500 acres (1,000 ha) northeast of what is now Sanford from the Seminole Nation. In 1839, John Pemberton leased 1,200 acres (400 ha) near what would become downtown Sanford from David Browning for $5 per year. This area became known as Jacksonville Landing due to its location on the Jacksonville River mouth just upstream from where today's Orange Street bridges cross it. In 1840, following completion of U.S. Route 41 through central Florida and its opening up new markets for agriculture and commerce along its route, Jepson sold 3 square miles (8 km2), or all that remains today of his original land grant., to Captain John Auld who placed it in trust for future settlers under the name "Jacksonville Landing." In 1845 Major General Andrew Jackson moved his army across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans after driving Texas Rangers out of Gulfport during the Mexican-American War and into Indian Territory; he also ordered General Joseph Easley to take possession of all land eastward between Tampa Bay and Georgia Line which included most or all present day Polk County excepting St Petersburg/Clearwater). As result large areas including much acreage now within contiguous parts of Brevard and Polk Counties were undeveloped when US 41 reached Sanford in late 1945/early 1946 . At this time Captain Auld's family deed said: ". but we know no one will occupy them until they are developed by us" Commodore Halsey had been trying to develop eastern Polk County adjacent to Fort Myers since early 1944 when he established military operations headquarters at Clearwater Naval Air Station with an eye towards creating an air base deep within those mangroves - only 1 mile offshore - clearing way then for development eastward beyond NAS Pensacola – annexation taking place effective date 5 Apr 1946 Although Captain Auld never lived there after leaving Jacksonville Landing he left behind a valuable parcel consisting mostly (>80%) modern day high school & shopping center complex called Harbor Park which includes world renowned Pensacola Yacht Club – former home & site for local fairs & carnivals thru 2001 holiday season
