He won by running as an isolationist candidate who opposed anytarism and wanted to keep America isolated from Europe. He served in the House of Representatives until 1861 when he resigned because of concerns about Confederate ambitions in the south. After resigning from Congress, Sanford returned to Jacksonville where he resumed his grocery store career. In 1865, Sanford was appointed commissioner of Internal Revenue by PresidentAndrew Johnson after Johnson’s decision not to run for reelection that year. In 1870, Sanford was elected county judge of Duval County which included parts of Jacksonville. From 1870-1872, he also served as Mayor of Jacksonville while also holding various other offices such as state senator (1871-1875). After leaving office as mayor in 1872, Sanford settled down to run his grocery store again until his death in 1901 at the age of ninety-six years old. Despite being a poor politician and having few accomplishments during his life due to health problems caused by alcoholism and diabetes mellitus, Samuel P.[anford] may be considered one ofFlorida’s most notable political figures due to his role in helping form postwar Florida into a functional democracy

The town began to grow slowly until 1861 when it became one of six Seminole towns merged into Tallahassee under state law after Florida's secession from the United States In 1865, Jonathan Cates established a cotton gin and located a post office in what is now downtown Sanford In 1867 an insurance company was organized and named American General Insurance Company In 1870 John Hickey opened his store on First Street which became known as "The Gilded Age Store" During this time many new businesses were opened including Jardine Farms Creamery (now Chiquita Brands), A&P grocery store and Lighthouse Inn & Casino which remains open to this day as one of several former hotel/casinos in town today
In 1892, Sanford was founded by J.C. Sanford as a small village on a bend in the I-4 highway. It was named for General John C. Sanford, then military governor of Florida. The village grew quickly due to its location and its easy access to road and rail transportation. In 1912, it became an incorporated town with a population of 100 people. In 1942, during World War II, the town was renamed for General George Smedley Butler after he helped lead Allied forces into victory over Nazi Germany.
