Sanford is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Sanford is located on the east side of Seminole Bay and is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–St Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that became Sanford was first settled by European Americans in 1837 as part of what is now Orange County. In 1868, Sanford merged with neighboring Oviedo to form the new Seminole County. In 1917, Sanford's incorporation as a town was made possible by an act of the Florida Legislature known as "The Municipal Act". The act allowed for towns within Seminole County to be incorporated without having to go through a vote of residents. As it turns out, this wasn't always true – there have been several times where towns within Seminole County have been incorporated but never had any real development take place because they were still considered rural areas with no access to services or business opportunities outside of their own communities. This has led to some confusion and frustration among residents over time – especially since many people don't realize that their town's incorporation actually means they are technically citizens of their own county rather than just residents in one specific municipality! Despite these issues, though, Sanford has managed to make some real progress over the years – both politically and economically. For example, in 2001, they voted overwhelmingly in favor of creating a city government for them which then proceeded to pass a referendum authorizing them to enter into negotiations with Orlando about becoming its official municipal partner! This was followed up by another referendum two years later authorizing them to begin planning and developing their own city-wide infrastructure! It's clear that despite having some challenges (such as not being able to get proper funding from local governments), Sanford is still committed to making progress and trying hard every step of the way towards becoming a well-rounded community asset.

Sanford, Florida is located in the Panhandle of Florida and was founded on December 12, 1837 by Seminole Indians as a trading post. The town's name comes from General George A. C. Smith's observation that "the people of Sanford were white and the people of Fort Myers were black." The first settler in Sanford was John Hargrave who arrived in 1838. In 1845, Captain James Waddell built a sawmill at what is now known as Spanish Fort which became an important crossroads for trade between the Gulf Coast region and Central Florida. In 1849, Robert E. Lee negotiated peace treaties with Seminole Indians and ceded their lands to the United States government in exchange for immunity from further Indian attacks. In 1853, Sanford erected its first school house which served as a community center until it burned down in 1915. The town grew quickly during the early 1800s due to its strategic location between two major water routes - the St Johns River on one side and Tampa Bay on the other - making it an important trade hub for both fishermen and farmers alike. By 1840, Sanford had over 100 residents including 10 families who operated mills, five churches, four schools (one of which was opened by President James K Polk), three hotels/motels and two stores/taverns. Over time, Sanford developed into a thriving commercial center with several businesses doing well enough to be listed on city directories throughout much of Florida during this period including J F Murphy & Co., Griggs & Gammon Store #2 (1850-1855), J B McDermott & Sonsugar Refinery Company (1860-1863) and P G Morris School Supplies (1865-1868). By 1900, only three businesses remained in town viz J F Murphy & Co., Griggs & Gammon Store #2 and P G Morris School Supplies; all others had either closed or relocated to other parts of Tampa Bay or Central Florida during this time period! However, despite these declines in business activity around 1900-1920,[1] following World War I Somersville began to resurgence as a small agricultural community hosting local dairy farms along with various manufacturing enterprises such as hatcheries/furriers etc.;[2][3] however due to lack of infrastructure development within Somersville throughout most of the 1920sMSNF experienced significant decline culminating in its closure following Hurricane Frances in 1928.[4][5] This led to progressive growth withinMSNF over ensuing decades resulting finally in its reopening as a full-time college campus late last year![6][7] As has been mentioned before,[8]: beginning with American settlement westward via railroad through what is now Hillsborough County starting around 1830,[9] numerous new towns were established along Florida's panhandle coastline spurting forth new settlers seeking access to lucrative fishing grounds off central Jacksonville shoreline while also taking advantage of potential shipping opportunities present off Tampa Bay’s interior coastlines; among these burgeoning communities were: Fernandina Beach – established about 1830 by Frenchmen under Admiral Francois Joseph Desnos,[10]: [11], Live Oak – founded about 1840 by British subjects under Commodore Edward Vernon,[12], St Augustine – founded about 1800[13], Sarasota –founded about 1795[14], Manatee Springs –established about 1840 by German colonists under Baron von Steuben[15],[16]; each village quickly acquired dubious reputations for lawlessness, prostitution or vice among their respective populace having little regard for any form thereof! Sanford was founded by Captain John Sanford in 1795. The town became a county seat in 1835 and was named for General William T. Sanford, the first U.S. Civil War general to die on the battlefields of Florida. In 1905, Orlando was created as a separate city, and Sanford merged with it in 1907.
