Sanford, Florida, is home to the oldest pepper spray manufacturing company in the United States. The company was founded in 1919 by two brothers named George and Harry Pepper. Pepper Spray Park is located in Sanford, and was dedicated to honoring the memory of their father, who died of a heart attack while playing with his children. The original pepper spray began production in 1919 as a safety device for law enforcement officers. It has been used extensively throughout history to protect people from violence and crime. Today, pepper spray remains an important tool for law enforcement officials across the United States. Sanford is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Sanford has been a community since 1853 and was named for General John A. Sanford who fought against Seminoles in that year. In 1907, it became a city and now has a population of over 5,000 people. In 1853, General John A. Sanford moved his family from Georgia to what is now Sanford after they were driven out by the Seminoles. He served as an officer in the Creek War (1836-1839) and during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Afterward he decided to settle down in Florida and help develop this new land. On November 17, 1852 he was given 1/2 acre of land east of Lake Monroe by Governor Andrew Jackson for $5 per acre payable within five years or be sold back to him at public auction on December 12th of that year with no interest allowed to any party other than himself until paid off with profits from future sales In 1857 Captain James Ketchum donated 20 acres northwest of Sanford for town site development which led to its incorporation as a town on July 3rd, 1863 . On February 14th 1870 Captain George Sands donated another 80 acres west of Southeastern Boulevard for use as an agricultural park . However due to many factors including lack of access to water resources and high taxes confiscating these lands by the state for “urban improvement” - much like later developments around Orlando - Sanford's growth slowed down until 1912 when it regained its original size thanks largely to annexation by Kissimmee into Lake County; however annexations have continued sporadically ever since making it one of Floridas fastest growing communities On January 2nd 1905 Mayor William Ladd donated 100 feet wide trackless road (later become State Road 441) running northeasterly from downtown through present day Eustis across Route 812 just south of current Day Hialeah Avenue near mile post 695 southbound before turning easterly onto US 301 just north side present day Vandenberg AFB runway where SR 441 terminated becomingState Road 441 again before continuing northeasterly along present day I-4 th towards Daytona Beach which soon intersects US 401 then continues almost due north past today's Daytona Beach Airport before terminating at CR 9 highway intersection about 8 miles northeast today's Orange Bowl Zone
Sanford County was formed in 1837 from the central part of Miami County. The county is named for General James Sanford, commander of American forces in Florida during the Seminole War. The first courthouse and jail were built in Sanford in 1839. In 1841, the area was surveyed for a railroad line and a depot was built at what is now downtown Sanford. The county seat, Sanford, was established at this Depot by order of the Legislature on March 3,1846.
