Sanford is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sanford is located on State Road 836, about 22 miles (35 km) east of Tampa and 36 miles (59 km) west of Clearwater. The area now known as Sanford was first settled by Seminoles in the early 1800s. After ceding their land to the United States in 1821, they began developing it into a village and farm community. In 1887, George Washington Carver moved here from Savannah, Georgia and founded Carver's Farm with his brother John Witherspoon Carver. The two men developed a cornmeal production business that became one of America's largest producers of corn flakes. In 1928, they sold their share in the company to Japanned investors and renamed it Japnoland foods Corporation. They continued to produce cornflakes until 1973 when they merged with Archer Daniels Midland Company to form Archer Daniels Midland/Aramco Co., Inc.). In 1931, Sanford Mayor Harry Dickson organized what would become its first city government when he succeeded his predecessor Gaili Grimes as mayor after she resigned from office due to illness. A year later he named Wanda Laughlin as City Manager and served until her retirement in 1955; then she was succeeded by Homer Kline until his death in 1959; then Hilda Lannan took over for him until her retirement in 1989; then William Moseley became City Manager effective October 1st 1991 . From then on through 2002 there have been three mayors: Norman Yarbrough (1991-1994), Chuck Roemer (1996–1999), Bill Lutz (2001-2002). On July 12th 2006 Scott Greenstein assumedMayor duties effective September 2nd 2001 after Mayor Hilda Lannan retired
