In the early 1800s, Sanford was a small town in Florida. It had a population of about seventy-five people and was located on the Seminole Indian Reservation. The town was founded by Baptist missionaries in 1816. The first settler in Sanford was Dr. John Hennepin, who built a house on the corner of High Street and Elm Street. In 1830, Sanford became part of St. Petersburg County and began to grow rapidly. By 1840, it had a population of two hundred people and is considered to be one of the earliest settlements in Central Florida. The arrival of firearms changed the way that Sanford functioned. Prior to this time, shotguns were used for hunting game rather than self-defense purposes. As soon as guns became available, residents began using them for protection against theft and other crime. Firearms also allowed for more efficient tracking of deer during hunts which helped increase crop yields and support local economic development throughout the years. Sanford, Florida is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,423 at the 2010 census. Sanford is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Lake Buena Vista Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original Seminole Tribe people lived here for many centuries before they were forcibly moved to Indian Territory in 1826. In 1846, Seminoles from nearby Fort Pierceceded Sanford and formed their own village there. The first post office was established in Sanford on December 11, 1851. By 1860, the community had grown so large that it incorporated as a city on December 15 of that year. In 1865, General Andrew Johnson ordered all Seminoles living east of Tampa Bay removed to Indian Territory and their lands became part of the new state of Florida; Sanford was not included in this move. In 1893, after years of negotiations between the federal government and the tribe's leaders over land claims and compensation for losses suffered during the American Civil War (the war had ended three years earlier), a treaty was signed by both sides which granted all Seminole Indians full citizenship status and began talks about resettlement back into their ancestral territory east of Tampa Bay. However, nothing ever happened to these plans due to political reasons related to Andrew Johnson's presidency and his successor Ulysses S Grant's administration On November 5th 1907 a tornado touched down near Sanford while passing through Kissimmee; it killed 4 people including an 8-year old girl named Belle Morton who lost her father when the tornado hit his home just outside town limits This event helped start any interest people may have had about tornadoes being more common around here because it made them think twice about what could happen if they didn't take care with things like tying up power cords or having roofs over your heads
The town of Sanford, Florida was founded in 1837 by Captain George B. Sanford and his wife Anna. The community became a county seat in 1868, and was named for General John Fenton Sanford, the first U.S. Senator from Florida. In 1925, the town renamed itself after its founder.
