In 1834, Captain Smith organized the first town meeting in Sanford and set up a government with a mayor, six trustees and twelve constables. In 1840, Captain Smith donated land to buildthe First National Bank of Jacksonville. The bank was incorporated in 1851 and became one of the most significant institutions in Jacksonville during its early years.
