Sanford is a town in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,621 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Sanford comes from Spanish and means "safe harbor." The history of Sanford can be traced back to 1838 when Captain John J. Sanford founded the town on a tract of land purchased from Native American Chief Seminole. The first store in town was built by Capt. Sanford and his family in 1840. In 1851, Drury & Company began trading here and soon became one of the most important merchants in this region. In 1865, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt founded the Port Tampa Lines here and business flourished until World War II when the port was destroyed by enemy fire. When it reopened following the war, Sanford again thrived as a key commercial center for southern Fla.. In 1951, Mayor Harry Tillery began efforts to rename the city after General Joseph Eustace McGeorge Patton which eventually succeeded and today's name – Joe Eustace – reflecting its once strong military connection to that general during those early days of America's involvement in World War II. In 1969, plans were made to build a plaza along Cermak Road which would house shopping centers operated by local businesses with an intent to create jobs within the community while also stimulating economic development outside of it; however this project never came to fruition because money ran out raising doubts about its feasibility or lack thereof before finally giving way to more pressing concerns facing Collier County at that time such as increasing crime rates and infrastructure needs across various industries including educationally deprived areas throughout central Broward County where much needed new housing had not been built yet due largely to political constraints put up by then county commissioners who saw no need for additional housing given their previous investment in infrastructure elsewhere withinCollier County despite allegations from residents living near where these developments were planned that their homes would become targets for robberies if they were ever completed without their consent since they would have less access than developers who could potentially provide security for these projects).
The area now known as Sanford, Florida was first inhabited by the Timucua tribe. The Seminole Tribe of Florida arrived in the area in the late 1700s and began to inhabit the region. The area became part of Spanish Florida after its fall from British rule in 1821. In 1835, Sanford was founded by John A. Sanford, a Confederate general and mayor of Mobile, Alabama. The town grew quickly due to its location on a major trading route between New Orleans and Tampa Bay. By 1840, Sanford had become a small community with about 100 residents. In 1845, George Washington Capps established Fort Payne on Sanford's riverbank to control trade with Indian tribes in what is now central Florida. During the American Civil War, Sanford lent support to Confederate General Robert Easley against Union forces during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. After the war ended, General Capps returned home and renamed his town after himself as thanks for assistance during the war. In 1870, Fannie Mae Brown purchased land east of town from Jno Pemberton for $10 per acre price which she divided into four parcels totaling . She built her first home there in 1902 and named it "Fannie Mae Brown House." In 1912-13, Mrs. Brown donated land near her house to create an open space called "Brown Park" which later became University Park (now Central Park). It was through this donation that Central Park was officially dedicated on November 16th 1913 by Drury Latham IIIrd (then Mayor of Tampa) as "a park for all classes and ages". During World War II (1939-1945), Sanford served as a military airfield serving both United States Army Air Forces fighter planes used in bombing raids over Europe as well as Japanese planes engaged in combat over South America or Southeast Asia; however no human beings were killed at this airbase until 1945 when two pilots flying an experimental B-29 bomber were lost while returning from their mission over Japan
