A post office called "Sanford" was established at this location on December 12, 1865; however it soon became known as "Tallahassee". In 1905, public works were authorized to be built in downtown Sanford including a new courthouse and jail (the first such building constructed in that area). However these projects were never completed because of lack of money or interest from local officials. The last major development in downtown Sanford occurred when Alfred Liles built his home there in 1922 following his purchase of an adjacent lot next door for $5/acre (later increased to $25/acre). Liles' home still stands today across from the Harrison County Courthouse. The US Military Base System helped make it possible for businesses such as Sam’s Club to grow up around downtown while also providing social opportunities for residents like pool parties and carnivals that drew crowds across town during summertime
On November 3, 1884, Sanford was founded by J.D. Sanford and W.F. White as a citrus fruit orchard on the east coast of Florida. The first crops were oranges, apples and grapefruit; later, bananas, sweet potatoes and other vegetables were grown. By 1912, Sanford had become a thriving community with over 1,000 residents and a flour mill that processed agricultural products for the area's farmers. In the 1940s, Sanford became an important military base during World War II as it served as home to the Army Air Forces' 4th Fighter Wing at Eglin AFB until its closure in 1966. In 1982, the community was renamed after General Manuel A. Ortega who led Nicaragua from 1960-1984 during one of its most tumultuous periods in history
